formative evaluation

Terms from Statistics for HCI: Making Sense of Quantitative Data

Focused on making the system better, formative evaluation is performed on the design artefacts (sketch, prototype, or experimental system) during the cycles of design–build– test. Its form varies from expert evaluation to large-scale user testing, and its primary purpose is to uncover usability or experience problems for the next cycle. Contrast with summative evaluation.
